History
Origins
Elevate traces its roots to a small Texas-based airline founded on March 15, 1967, by Walter Dunmore and Cecilia Ortiz. The pair envisioned an airline connecting major Texas cities with frequent, affordable flights while maintaining a simple and efficient operating structure.
The company initially focused on connecting Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio. Legal challenges from competing airlines delayed the launch of scheduled operations, but after several years of litigation, Elevate received approval to begin preparing for passenger service.
Launch and early growth
Elevate began scheduled operations on June 18, 1971, using three Boeing 737-200 aircraft. Its original network connected Dallas Love Field with Houston Hobby and San Antonio.
The airline immediately focused on low fares, frequent departures, rapid aircraft turnarounds, and high aircraft utilization. By concentrating on a single aircraft family, Elevate was able to simplify pilot training, maintenance, scheduling, and fleet management.
During its first several years, Elevate expanded throughout Texas while maintaining its low-cost operating model. The airline gradually added additional cities and increased frequencies on its core routes.
Expansion
Following airline deregulation in 1978, Elevate began expanding beyond Texas. The carrier added destinations throughout the southern and western United States and established new operating bases in markets such as Houston, Phoenix, Las Vegas, and Chicago.
Elevate increasingly used secondary airports to serve major metropolitan areas. Dallas Love Field, Chicago Midway, Houston Hobby, and Baltimore/Washington became important parts of the airline's network, allowing Elevate to maintain frequent service while avoiding some of the congestion associated with larger airports.
During the 1980s and 1990s, Elevate continued growing its Boeing 737 fleet and expanded into markets across the country. The airline's point-to-point network allowed passengers to travel between many cities without relying entirely on traditional hub-and-spoke connections.
In 1987, Elevate introduced its Elevate Rewards frequent-flyer program, providing passengers with a loyalty program while maintaining the airline's low-cost identity.
National growth
Elevate entered the 2000s as one of the largest domestic low-cost airlines in the United States. The carrier continued expanding its network while maintaining its focus on Boeing 737 aircraft and high-frequency service.
The airline gradually expanded beyond the continental United States, launching service to Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central America. International flying became an increasingly important part of the airline's leisure network while domestic routes remained the core of its operation.
In 2011, Elevate acquired Texas-based competitor AirLink Airways. The acquisition expanded Elevate's presence in several major markets and provided additional aircraft, gates, and routes. Over the following years, Elevate gradually integrated the airline's operations into its own network.
By the mid-2010s, Elevate had become one of the largest airlines in the United States by passenger volume and fleet size.
Recent developments
Elevate continued expanding throughout the late 2010s and early 2020s, adding new destinations and increasing frequencies across its domestic network.
The airline transitioned its fleet toward newer Boeing 737-800 and 737 MAX aircraft, allowing it to replace older aircraft while improving fuel efficiency and extending the range of its network.
In December 2022, Elevate experienced a major operational disruption during the Christmas holiday period after a severe winter storm affected its network. Thousands of flights were canceled over several days, leading the airline to invest heavily in upgraded scheduling, crew-management, and operational systems.
Beginning in 2023, Elevate announced a broader modernization of its commercial strategy. The airline introduced new fare products, additional seating options, expanded premium offerings, and changes to its traditional boarding process.
As of 2026, Elevate operates more than 800 aircraft to more than 120 destinations from a network of major operating bases across the United States.
Fleet
Elevate operates a predominantly Boeing 737 fleet consisting of 737-700, 737-800, and 737 MAX aircraft. The airline's fleet strategy is centered around maintaining a common aircraft family to simplify operations and maximize aircraft utilization.
The airline has continued placing orders for additional 737 MAX aircraft to support fleet growth and replace older aircraft.
Corporate affairs
Elevate is headquartered in Dallas, Texas, near Dallas Love Field. The airline is structured as a single operating company under Elevate Holdings, Inc.
The carrier maintains major operating bases at Dallas Love Field, Houston Hobby, Chicago Midway, Denver, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Baltimore/Washington, Orlando, and numerous other large domestic stations.
Destinations
Elevate serves an extensive network of cities throughout the United States, including major metropolitan areas, secondary cities, and leisure destinations.
International service includes destinations in Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central America. Unlike traditional network airlines, Elevate primarily operates a point-to-point network, allowing passengers to travel between many city pairs without requiring a connection through a traditional hub.
Business model
Elevate's traditional business model is based on low fares, high aircraft utilization, frequent departures, and a simplified fleet.
For much of its history, the airline differentiated itself through a straightforward passenger experience that included free checked baggage, no change fees on most fares, and open seating.
During the 2020s, Elevate began modifying portions of this model as it sought additional revenue and responded to changing passenger preferences and increasing competition from both legacy airlines and other low-cost carriers.
Controversies
2022 holiday disruption
A major winter storm in December 2022 caused Elevate to cancel thousands of flights during the Christmas travel period. The disruption stranded passengers throughout the airline's network and exposed weaknesses in its crew-scheduling and operational systems.
Elevate subsequently announced major investments in technology, staffing, and operational resilience.
Business model changes
Elevate's traditional open-seating and boarding system became increasingly controversial during the 2020s as the airline looked for new sources of revenue and attempted to provide additional options for passengers.
The company subsequently announced plans to introduce assigned seating and additional seating products, representing one of the largest changes to Elevate's traditional customer experience.
Labor relations
Elevate's pilots, flight attendants, mechanics, and other employee groups are represented by multiple labor unions. The airline has periodically faced difficult contract negotiations, particularly following the COVID-19 pandemic as employees sought higher compensation and changes to work rules.
Despite periodic labor disputes, Elevate remains one of the largest employers in the American airline industry and continues to operate a heavily unionized workforce.
