How this site works

Pages and edit codes

Everything here is a page: a title, an address, and its text. An address looks like /p/47/china-airlines โ€” the number is the page, the words after it are only there to be readable, so a renamed page keeps its number and old links still arrive. Two pages may share a title; the number tells them apart.

To start one, press New page and give it a title (you need a verified account โ€” see Accounts below). If a page with a similar name already exists you are warned first, because two pages cannot be merged later. When the page is created you are shown its edit code โ€” once, with a Copy button beside it. Put it somewhere safe: it is never shown again and cannot be recovered, and whoever holds it owns the page.

To change a page, open it and press Edit this page. You are asked for the code the first time, and this browser then holds the page open for a while so you are not asked on every save. Handing the code to somebody makes them an equal owner โ€” they can lock you out by regenerating it โ€” so share it only with people you would trust with the page. If a code has leaked, open the editor and regenerate it: everyone holding the old one, including you, is out until they have the new one, and anything they had waiting for review is withdrawn and they are told so. Staff can rotate a code too and deliver the new one to whoever created the page; nothing else about a code can be looked up, by anyone.

A page's text is made of sections, one after another, each written in Markdown โ€” the guide covers headings, lists, tables, cards of facts, pictures at a chosen size and a few text effects. The editor adds, moves and removes sections and counts as you type: each section holds up to 9,999 characters, and this site sets how many sections a page may have. A long subject reads best as one page with headings (## Fleet, ## History); write __TOC__ on a line of its own and a Contents box of those headings stands there.

Link to another page with double brackets โ€” [[China Airlines]], or [[China Airlines|the Taiwanese carrier]] in your own words, or [[p:47]] by number when two pages share a title; a link to a page that does not exist yet stays as text until somebody writes it (linking). Every page shows at its foot which pages link to it.

Pages are sorted by the tags written in their text: #airline, or #country:taiwan inside a tag group (tags and tag groups). A tag is a word in the prose, not a box to fill in, and a page with none is in no listing. Pages that belong together โ€” an airline group and its carriers โ€” are grouped with a #group: tag, and the tag's own page lists all of them. Pictures are uploaded once and placed by number: ![alt](media:47).

Accounts and review

An account is a keyring, not a deed. It remembers which pages you have unlocked so you are not asked for their codes again, and it is where you are told what happened to work you submitted for review; it never owns a page. You need a verified account to start pages and to upload images. Verification is a link sent to your address โ€” or handed to you by an administrator, since this site may send no mail. You can close your account at any time: your address and details are erased, and the pages you made stay exactly as they were.

Depending on how the site is set up, some things wait for staff before they show: a new page may need approval before readers see it; a change may be queued for review instead of going live at once โ€” while it waits, the page is frozen and nobody else can edit it; an uploaded image may wait for approval before it can be placed. Whatever the outcome โ€” approved, not accepted, or expired because nobody got to it within the review window โ€” you are told on your account page, and by mail if you take it. An expired submission was not judged; you can submit it again.

Staff can also freeze a page (readers still see it; nobody can edit it) or hide one (it disappears from the site until it is unhidden), and can change any page without its code. Every staff act is recorded.
