China Northern Airlines (中国北方航空) is a major Chinese airline and the flag carrier of the People’s Republic of China. Alongside its subsidiaries, it constitutes one of the largest airline networks globally and the largest within Asia. The airline operates as a state-affiliated enterprise.

History

Established in 1991 in Shenyang, Liaoning, China Northern Airlines was backed by provincial and private investors as part of a broader initiative by the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) to foster regional carriers rather than operate them directly. The airline developed primary hubs in Shenyang, Dalian, and Harbin.

In 2001, China Northern Airlines merged with China Northwest Airlines, integrating operations in Xi’an and Lanzhou. In 2003, it merged with China Xinjiang Airlines, acquiring operations in Ürümqi and throughout the Xinjiang region.

In 2016, the airline acquired China Express Air and established a significant presence at Tianjin Binhai International Airport. In 2019, following the opening of Beijing Daxing International Airport, China Northern Airlines assumed primary operational responsibility at Beijing Capital International Airport.

In 2024, China Northern Airlines became the first mainland Chinese carrier to provide complimentary global in-flight internet connectivity across its entire fleet.

In 2025, China Northern Airlines purchased a 70% equity stake in Tashi Airlines from China Pearl Group, maintaining the carrier as a subsidiary.

Technology

China Northern Airlines has long been an early and consistent adopter of consumer-facing technology in the Chinese market. It emphasizes digital check-in, digital boarding passes, in-flight internet access, wireless in-flight entertainment (IFE), and artificial intelligence tools across the passenger journey. The airline prioritizes its mobile app and mobile-first experiences, encouraging most customer interactions around smartphone use rather than traditional channels.

Notably, China Northern does not equip its aircraft with physical seatback IFE systems. Instead, it provides complimentary in-flight internet access worldwide alongside wireless IFE.

China Northern Airlines leads mainland China’s in-flight connectivity with a hybrid WLAN on narrow-body aircraft: LEO (Spacesail, OneWeb), GEO (China Satcom, APT), and China Mobile 5G-ATG, managed via Panasonic’s multi-network platform (Airbus HBCplus, Panasonic ESA on Boeing). Traffic routes through Chinese gateways for uniform filtering. Account holders get free, unlimited access via captive portal; local IFE operates independently.

Interline Partnerships

China Northern Airlines operates independent interline partnerships with:

Voyager Club

Voyager Club (远航俱乐部), marketed as Voyager (远航), is the loyalty program of China Northern Airlines. Launched in October 2026, it succeeded WorldStar, the former program of the WorldLine Air System. Enrollment is complimentary; a China Northern account automatically constitutes Voyager Club membership. The program encompasses China Northern Airlines and its subsidiaries.
