History
Founded in 1997 in Calgary Alberta, Western planned to bring a low cost travel experience to travelers in Western Canada as well as open new point to point routes not served by major Canadian airlines. The airline opened up flights from Calgary to Vancouver, Kelowna and Victoria and Edmonton to Vancouver, Kelowna and Victoria in 1998. More destinations across Western Canada where added in the following years. The airline did not expand into eastern Canada until 2000 when it launched service to Hamilton from its Western Bases, with Ottawa and Montreal begining from Montreal and Winnipeg later in 2000. Winnipeg was used as a connecting point between Eastern and Western Canada and received many of the East Coast destinations before Edmonton or Calgary.
2000-2010: Rapid Expansion
Western expanded rapidly through the early 2000s with a push for affordable air travel bringing its famous slogan "Fair Fares" to life. More destinations where added expanding its base in Hamilton for more services to Atlantic canada a key market for the airline with flights from Hamitlon to Moncton, Halifax and Saint Johns added.
The airline received its first 737NG (A 737-700) on January 8th, 2000. The 15 737-200s where retired fully by 2004. A single 737-200 remains preserved on Sea Island while the remaining 14 aircraft where either scrapped or sold.
Service into the United States was added in 2005 with the airline serving Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Palm Springs from various cities in Canada. Flights to more destinations in the US where added in the following years solidifying the airline as a truly international carrier. Flights to Hawawi began in 2007 from Vancouver using ETOPs 737-700s and 800s.
In 2007 the airline added its first international services to Puerto Vallarta, Cabo and Cancun which was a huge milestone for the airline. in 2009 Western began to partner with Cascade Air to operate regional flights with their Q100 and Q300 fleet. Western Cascades was a regional brand for the airline with a unique livery different from the rest of the 737 fleet. Q100s where retired in 2012 and the Q300s in 2020.
In 2008 Western closed all Hamilton flights except for flights to Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver and Winnipeg shifting its focus to Toronto-Pearson.
2010-2020: Key Market Expansion
In 2010, Western Vacations was created as a vacation package agency to sell Western flights and hotels, making bookings on Western flights to warm destinations easier and more popular. This helped the airline expand rapidly into Mexico and the Caribbean. In 2013, Cascades Air opened bases in Calgary and Edmonton to serve regional destinations from Alberta. Cascade Air was purchased by Western in 2014, but the branding survived until 2018 when the regional airline was rebranded to "Western Link" which is still in use today.
Western opened further routes throughout the 2010s, expanding from its 3 Western bases. Notable additions were Fort Lauderdale, New York-JFK, Quebec City and Sacramento. Winnipeg was officially added as a focus city in 2017.
2020 and beyond: Shift to more premium travel
In 2020, the airline announced its plans to shift to a full service hybrid carrier, building off its low cost model and adding more premium offerings. Western opened lounges in Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver in 2022. Western continues to operate as a hybrid carrier offering a mix of premium service but also low prices for those who wish for a more basic experience simular to low cost carriers.
In 2025, Western aquired SnowBrd a holiday carrier headquartered in Toronto, Ontario. SnowBrd was aquired for its strategic advantage and market in Mexico and the Caribbean and simular 737 based fleet.
