China Pearl Airlines (中国珍珠航空) China Pearl Airlines (Chinese: 中国珍珠航空) is a major Chinese airline headquartered in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province. Founded in 1994, the carrier has grown into one of China’s largest aviation groups, operating a combined fleet of over 600 aircraft across its subsidiaries. China Pearl is known for its coastal‑hub strategy, premium long‑haul services, and its extensive domestic network throughout South China. China Pearl Airlines is also a founding member of the Orbis Alliance.

History Founding and Early Development (1994–2003) China Pearl Airlines was established in 1994 as part of Guangdong Province’s effort to create a competitive regional carrier capable of challenging the dominance of Beijing‑ and Shanghai‑based airlines. Initially operating a small fleet of narrow‑body aircraft, China Pearl focused on routes linking Guangzhou, Fuzhou, Xiamen, and other Pearl River Delta cities.

Throughout the late 1990s, the airline expanded rapidly, adding international services to Southeast Asia and Japan. By 2003, China Pearl had become one of the fastest‑growing carriers in southern China.

Acquisition of Nanxia Airlines (2004) In 2004, China Pearl Airlines purchased an 83 percent stake in Nanxia Airlines, a regional carrier serving secondary cities across South China. The acquisition marked China Pearl’s first major expansion into multi‑brand operations.

Nanxia was gradually repositioned as the group’s low‑cost subsidiary, operating high‑frequency point‑to‑point routes and feeding traffic into China Pearl’s mainline hubs. The integration significantly increased the group’s domestic reach and contributed to its fleet surpassing 90 aircraft by the late 2010s. In Late 2026, Nanxia Airlines became a Full Service Carrier

Nanxia remains a core part of the China Pearl Group, operating alongside the mainline carrier and other affiliated aviation businesses.

Fleet and Group Expansion By the mid‑2020s, China Pearl Airlines and its subsidiaries operated a combined fleet of over 600 aircraft, making it one of the largest airline groups in East Asia. The fleet includes a mix of narrow‑body and wide‑body aircraft serving domestic, regional, and long‑haul markets.

China Pearl has also explored additional fleet expansion opportunities, including interest in acquiring Boeing 747‑8 and 747‑400 aircraft for high‑capacity international routes. These evaluations reflect the airline’s long‑term strategy to strengthen its premium and long‑range capabilities.

In November 2013, China Pearl bought a 70 percent stake in Tashi Airlines, a Tibet based carrier. In September 2026 however, China Northern bought China Pearl's stake in the airline.

Corporate Structure China Pearl Airlines oversees several aviation‑related entities, including:
