WorldLine was a former airline system originally headquartered in New York City, United States, and subsequently relocated to Beijing, China.

History

Founding

WorldLine began in 1997, years before multilateral airline partnerships became common. It started as an unnamed bilateral arrangement between China Northern Airlines and Cardinal Air Lines built on complementary networks. Cardinal relied on China Northern for Asia and onward connections across the continent. China Northern relied on Cardinal for North America and onward connections across North and South America.

From the start, China Northern saw the partnership as an integrated "air system" rather than a loose alliance. That vision gave WorldLine its full name, and the partnership adopted the slogan "World-class service, world-wide reliability."

Expansion and integration

The partnership grew when European-based WorldSpan Airlines Group joined, effectively creating an airline alliance.

WorldStar Loyalty Program

With Cardinal's support, China Northern pushed to replace each member's loyalty program with a single shared one, which launched as WorldStar. China Northern also proposed that all members drop their own branding and liveries for one unified WorldLine identity, with the aim of creating a single world-wide airline. Cardinal and WorldSpan rejected that step. What came out of the effort instead was a unified ticketing and scheduling system across all members and a shared business-class product sold under the WorldClass brand.

Associate expansion

Canada-based Western Airlines joined WorldLine as an associate member.

China Northern Airlines enrolled two of its subsidiary airlines, Macau-based Macau Air and Tibet-based Tashi Airlines, into WorldLine as associate member airlines.

Alliance Dissolution

In the mid-2020s Cardinal Air Lines, citing a desire for greater Asian flexibility and more operational independence, withdrew from WorldLine. WorldSpan Airlines Group followed Cardinal Air Lines, effectively dissolving WorldLine as an airline alliance.
